You ever hear that saying, that we know more about the surface of the moon than we do about the deep sea? It's crazy—there's more ocean than there is land in the world, and it's still managed to hold on to so much mystery. The first-ever footage of a giant squid—the ancient, legendary sea monster, the most famous denizen of the deep— was finally filmed in 2006, and the first really quality footage (the squid was alive, fully grown, and in its natural habitat) is just from 2012, the same year that the Curiosity rover landed on Mars. There is so much about the oceans that we don't know yet, so many alien creatures still living unseen. It's wild!

Along with making the pattern, this sampler was also an experiment in dyeing to get that light-to-dark gradient on the fabric.
